Joint Initiative Brings New Water Infrastructure to Pilot Butte

July 25, 2014 – Pilot Butte, Saskatchewan – Infrastructure Canada

Officials from all levels of government were in Pilot Butte today to celebrate the grand opening of the Town's Water Treatment and Sewage Disposal facility. Local residents now have a safer and more reliable source of drinking water, thanks to a partnership among federal, provincial and municipal governments.

Traditionally relying on private wells, which can contain unsafe levels of nitrate or certain minerals or toxins, the town upgraded its water infrastructure to ensure this close neighbouring community of Regina has a safe and reliable water supply.

Among other features, this initiative included the construction of a water treatment plant and a raw water pipeline, as well as a distribution system and a sewage disposal facility, which includes a sewage pumping station. Water from this new treatment plant will also be provided to the Town of Balgonie, a few kilometers east, by pipeline.

Quick facts

The federal and provincial governments provided joint funding of $12,964,184 through the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund.
The Government of Saskatchewan is also providing interest subsidies of up to $812,992 over a 5 year period on funds borrowed for the Town's portion of the infrastructure project through the Saskatchewan Infrastructure Growth Initiative.
The Town of Pilot Butte contributed $12,064,833 towards a total initiative cost of $25,029,017.
