August 14, 2014 – Vancouver, British Columbia – Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada
Today, Lois Brown, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, met with representatives from the Canadian International Institute for Extractives and Development (CIIEID).
The institute acts as a world-class centre of expertise in improving and strengthening resource governance. It provides a means for developing-country governments to access expertise in support of their own efforts through the delivery of practical and results-oriented technical assistance, education and training and applied research. It also helps developing-country governments meet their needs for policy, legislation, and regulatory frameworks development and implementation related to their own extractive sector.
“I am glad to see that the CIIEID is now operational, and we are looking forward to seeing the institute move ahead with its programming,” said PS Brown.
During its first year of start-up, the CIIEID focused on establishing operations, staffing, and undertaking scoping missions and consultations to define the institute’s programming areas. The CIIEID also delivered some initial programming activities such as workshops on artisanal mining and economic diversification in Ecuador as well as mining policy framework discussions with government representatives and stakeholders from Peru, Tanzania, Mongolia, Colombia, Ecuador and Burkina Faso.
“Canada delivers concrete development results through effective partnerships,” added Minister Paradis. “Through initiatives such as the CIIEID, we are proud to work closely with the private sector to create jobs, mobilize private investment, and unlock innovative solutions to development challenges to ensure we can break the cycle of poverty.”
The new institute is housed at the University of British Columbia, which works in coalition with Simon Fraser University and École Polytechnique de Montréal in operating the CIIEID.
