St. John’s, Newfoundland – The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, today announced the awarding of a $3 million contract to Heddle Marine Service Newfoundland for the second phase of Vessel Life Extension (VLE) and refit work to Canadian Coast Guard vessel CCGS Cygnus. The work will be completed at the Coast Guard base in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
The contract includes upgrades to fitted equipment and systems such as the propulsion control and steering systems to improve the operation and reliability of the vessel. A performance monitoring system will also be installed to provide real time accounting of fuel consumption allowing for optimal operation of the vessel.
As part of the major investment to the Canadian Coast Guard’s fleet renewal program announced in Economic Action Plan 2012, the Government of Canada will extend the lives of 16 Coast Guard vessels and complete mid-life modernizations on two hovercraft. This investment will also enable the Coast Guard to procure approximately 20 new vessels for its fleet.
