Ottawa, Ontario - 28 August 2014
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that he will travel to London, United Kingdom (U.K.), from September 2 to 3, 2014, on an official visit, which will include participation in a bilateral trade mission. He will then travel to Newport and Cardiff (Wales), U.K., to participate in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit from September 4 to 5, 2014.
In London, the Prime Minister will explore ways to promote new trade and investment opportunities between the two countries, including through the historic Canada-EU Trade Agreement. He will also discuss key international challenges such as the situations in Ukraine and the Middle East.
During his visit, the Prime Minister will meet with a number of key U.K. business leaders to promote Canada as a premier trading partner and a stable and reliable country in which to invest and do business. He will be accompanied by Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, who will be leading a trade mission to explore the competitive advantages that the Canada-EU Trade Agreement is expected to create.
The Prime Minister will then travel to Wales to participate in the NATO Summit which will bring together leaders from the 28 member countries as well as a number of non-NATO partner countries. He will be accompanied by John Baird, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Rob Nicholson, Minister of National Defence. At the Summit, the Prime Minister will underscore Canada’s commitment to the Alliance and the ongoing need for a strong and coordinated response to Russia’s efforts to destabilize Ukraine and undermine the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He will engage in frank discussions with his counterparts on pressing political and security challenges facing the trans-Atlantic community, including the security transition in Afghanistan.
