Ottawa, Ontario - 29 August 2014
From August 31 to November 8, 2013, the Canadian and U.S. Secretariats to the Regulatory Cooperation Council (RCC) invited public input on the next phase of Canada-U.S. regulatory cooperation.
Canada and the U.S. received a total of 111 submissions representing 160 individuals or organizations. They shared their views on how to expand and secure regulatory cooperation efforts between Canada and the U.S., identified regulatory initiatives that could be included in future work, and suggested ways to improve stakeholder engagement efforts.
In addition to the input received through the formal process in the Fall of 2013, the Joint Forward Plan was developed taking into consideration ideas and input provided by stakeholders throughout the RCC process which began in 2011. In addition, the plan recognizes the importance of ongoing engagement and includes a requirement for stakeholder input as part of the regular bi-national planning process going forward.
Nearly 90 per cent of the responses received were supportive of efforts to advance Canada-U.S. regulatory cooperation. Key themes included the importance of institutionalizing Canada-U.S. regulatory cooperation to make it a permanent fixture between our regulatory systems, and the importance of stakeholder engagement and their role. Stakeholders also identified many additional areas where regulators should work together to secure alignment in the next phase of work.
Submissions received in response to the 2013 Canada Gazette notice, from those who agreed to share their views publicly, are posted on the RCC website.
Submissions provided, in parallel, through the United States Federal Register process are available at: http://www.regulations.gov/#!docketDetail;D=OMB-2013-0004
