OTTAWA, ONTARIO (August 4, 2014) – The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, issued the following statement today on the 100th Anniversary of the start of the First World War:
"Today marks the 100th anniversary of the outset of the First World War. On this occasion I am honoured to mark the significant sacrifices Aboriginal people made during this terrible conflict.
Many thousands of Aboriginal people served their country and endured extraordinary hardship in the First World War as our nation entered a turning point in its history.
They fought overseas to defend the freedom, democracy and the rule of law of allied nations, and worked diligently to support the cause at home.
Their heroic acts of bravery earned them many military decorations, as well as the respect and enduring friendship of their comrades in arms. Hundreds of Aboriginal people from across Canada gave their lives in the First World War, so that all Canadians might know peace and inherit freedom.
To proudly recognize those who bravely served and sacrificed on our behalf, from 2014-2020 we will build awareness of how the war efforts shaped Canada, show our pride and create a legacy for generations to come."
