Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the occasion of the 69th anniversary of Korea’s independence:
“Today, I offer my best wishes to Korean communities in Canada and around the world celebrating Korean Independence Day, also known as ‘Gwangbokjeol,’ or ‘Restoration of Light Day.’
“Since its independence, Korea has succeeded in becoming a leading Asian economy with a strong and vibrant democracy. Canada and Korea enjoy excellent bilateral relations underpinned by Canada’s service in the Korean War, expanded commercial relations, and close people-to-people ties.
“I greatly enjoyed my visit to Seoul earlier this year, and look forward to continuing to work with President Park Geun-hye in the months ahead as we finalize the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement. Once implemented, this agreement will significantly boost trade and investment ties between our two countries, as well as create jobs and opportunities for Canadians and Koreans.
“Once again, on behalf of all Canadians, I wish all those taking part in festivities a very happy Korean Independence Day.”
