Funding support to improve guest experience at Memory Lane Heritage Village
September 5, 2014 – Lake Charlotte, NS – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
The Lake Charlotte Area Heritage Society (the Society) is undertaking technology and infrastructure enhancements to bring Memory Lane Heritage Village into the 21st century. Owned and operated by the Society, Memory Lane is a living-history museum that depicts rural Nova Scotia life in the 1940s, that is appreciated by Nova Scotians and visitors alike.
Technology infrastructure will include the installation of Wi-Fi FibreOP connections and Quick Response (QR) codes. These technologies will allow visitors to scan QR codes with smart phones to view multi-media re-enacted productions of how specific artifacts were used in daily life.
The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund, is providing a contribution of $210,550 to support the technology and infrastructure developments, as announced today by Minister Peter MacKay. The Government of Nova Scotia is contributing $61,375 through the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage and $63,994 through the Department of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism. Additional support includes $25,000 from the Municipality of Halifax.

We are pleased to be involved with projects like this one, right here in lake Charlotte, that help stimulate tourism across the province and that lay the foundations for a more sustainable economic capacity in our rural communities. Bridging the gap between yesteryear and today, this project will allow visitors with smart phones and tablets gain a deeper appreciation of the area’s built and natural history through the addition of technology that enables online storytelling.”
- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Regional Minister for Nova Scotia, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada
“Memory Lane Heritage Village is an award winning living history museum that portrays coastal rural life in Nova Scotia during the 1940s. The Province of Nova Scotia is pleased to support a facility that allows visitors to experience the province and how Nova Scotians lived decades ago and with these technological additions, the experience will be greatly enhanced.”
- The Honourable Tony Ince, Minister, Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage
“This project will add 21st century excitement to Memory Lane Heritage Village. The installation of WiFi-accessible enhancements through the use of smartphones and other devices will help to improve the visitor experience by allowing guests to watch short videos showing what life was like in the 1940’s.”
