Cornwall is home to a beautiful waterfront and marina, and has convenient access to Highway 401 and is about 60 minutes from Montréal and 90 minutes from Ottawa. It is located directly across from New York State, connected by bridge with Massena, New York with access to Highway 37.
Opened in 1962, the Canada Border Services Agency’s (CBSA) Cornwall port of entry (POE) was originally located on Cornwall Island, in the middle of the St. Lawrence River near the city of Cornwall, Ontario. The Cornwall Island port of entry was closed on May 31, 2009, and an interim facility was opened in the city of Cornwall on July 13, 2009.
The new and modern Cornwall POE facility is a 24/7 operation that accommodates high volumes of traffic and is well equipped to respond to the flow of people and goods entering the country, allowing for efficient processing of tourists and trade. Over 1.1 million vehicles and 1.6 million travellers were processed at the Cornwall POE over the last year.
The construction of Cornwall’s new facility was completed in January of 2014 to maintain a smooth operation for its growing popularity. It is equipped with regular five inspection lanes and one commercial inspection lane to provide better service to all its stakeholders, especially at peak times.
The new building is approximately 1,000 square metres and was built in phases to maintain smooth front line operations. Its “green” features include low-flow toilets, automatic lighting sensors and an HVAC system that meets or exceeds industry standards.
The facility offers fully bilingual services for commercial vessels, small vessels, commercial trucks, small airplanes, immigration facilitation, car, truck and bus clearances and low value personal goods and courier shipments.
Travellers can now plan their entry to Canada through the Cornwall POE by checking border wait times (BWTs) at www.cbsa.gc.ca/waittimes.
