September 12, 2014 – Sydney, Nova Scotia – Infrastructure Canada
The Greater Sydney Wastewater Collection project is now complete, improving wastewater treatment in Cape Breton Regional Municipality and in turn, the water quality in Sydney Harbour. Representatives from the federal, provincial and municipal governments gathered today to celebrate the occasion.
The multi-million dollar project was completed in three phases over the course of the last 18 months. It involved the installation of 10.8 kilometres of new collection piping and the construction of lift stations and diversion chambers to convey wastewater to the Battery Point Wastewater Treatment Plant.
As a result of this project, an increased volume of wastewater can now be treated before being released into the Sydney Harbour, helping to ensure the health and safety of local residents, and protect the environment.
