Toronto, Ontario - 11 September 2014
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today welcomed the report produced by Canada’s election observer mission on the May 25, 2014, Ukrainian Presidential election. The Prime Minister received the report from Senator Raynell Andreychuk and former Ontario Premier Mike Harris, co-chairs of the team, in Toronto.
The Canadian Election Observation Mission Final Report released today highlights the work carried out by Canada’s election observer mission to Ukraine to monitor the country’s May 25, 2014, Presidential election. The report summarizes their activities, findings, conclusions and recommendations.
The Canadian mission concluded that the Ukrainian election met international standards. The mission also noted that “notwithstanding the troubling violence in Luhansk and Donetsk, and the illegal annexation of sovereign Ukrainian territory in Crimea, the election was a clear and unambiguous reflection of the democratic will of the Ukrainian people.”
This report will be provided to the Government of Ukraine and its Central Electoral Commission to provide observations and recommendations for future elections in Ukraine, including the upcoming Parliamentary elections on October 26, 2014.
Since 2004, Canada has contributed hundreds of election observers to seven successive Ukrainian elections to help further strengthen democracy in the country.
