The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has laid a charge of human smuggling pursuant to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act against Mark Brian Abramenko, following an incident at the Carway border crossing.
On October 26, 2013, Abramenko entered Canada at the Carway border crossing where it is alleged CBSA officers found a female passenger concealed inside his vehicle. The female had been previously refused entry into Canada.
Abramenko is scheduled to appear in Lethbridge Provincial Court on September 15, 2014.

- This is the second time this year that the CBSA has laid a criminal charge for human smuggling in Alberta, pursuant to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
- In June 2014, Richard James Watt was sentenced to 16 days in jail and an $8,000 fine for aiding and abetting a foreign national to contravene the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
- All persons seeking entry into Canada must report to the CBSA. Failure to do so may lead to criminal prosecution.
