October 17, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today released the following statement:
“Canada deplores the renewal of violence across Libya and once again calls on all parties to accept an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
“All Libyans and their elected members of Libya’s House of Representatives should commit to the political dialogue process launched by Bernardino León, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, whose efforts we fully support.
“We urge all parties to reject violence, denounce terrorism and work together to establish an inclusive and representative government for the benefit of all Libyans.
“Canada believes that those guilty of violating international humanitarian law, as well as those who are actively working to derail efforts to bring an end to the fighting, must face consequences for their actions. UN Security Council Resolution 2174 must be respected, and violators must be sanctioned.”
