October 8, 2014 – Montréal, Quebec – Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada
Today, the Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, the Honourable Christian Paradis, gave a formal speech at the opening session of the International Conference on the Future of Francophone Media.
Organized by the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF), in partnership with Pôle Médias HEC Montréal, this conference brought together representatives of the media industry and civil-society organizations in various Francophone countries.
“Canada is proud to continue its contribution to solidarity within La Francophonie, an important community of 77 states and governments that brings together about 900 million people, including 220 million Francophones, on five continents,” Minister Paradis said. “Considering the profound technological changes that have occurred in the information and communications sector, this international conference will make it possible for La Francophonie to chart its course with regard to the media in the coming years.”
Canada continues to work to promote the French language and encourages Francophone media to continue to ensure global linguistic and cultural diversity. This diversity, which is fundamental to freedom of expression, echoes the democratic values that unite the countries of La Francophonie.
