The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to share a sample of its third quarter highlights (July – September) from its various operations in Edmonton, including airport, commercial, and inland operations. This sampling underscores the CBSA’s commitment to keeping communities safe and ensuring our laws are respected.
Two foreign nationals were issued deportations orders this quarter and removed from Canada: in July an Eastern European man was removed and in August a California woman was also removed – both for criminality. Both are permanently barred from returning to Canada.
On August 5, officers seized 2 kg of khat from a suspicious shipment destined to Edmonton. Upon opening the parcel, officers noted nine bundles of braided rope as declared, but concealed in the middle of each bundle was khat wrapped in cloth. The investigation is ongoing.
On August 11, Detector Dog Max indicated on a couple travelling from China. They declared dry food and spices
but upon examination of their suitcase, officers found undeclared eggs, milk and pies – which were seized for destruction. Officer s also found $32,000 in undeclared currency, a $5,600 purse and a $3,000 gold ring. The couple was issued a $2,700 penalty for not declaring the goods and a $2,500 penalty for not declaring the currency.
On September 5, officers seized 660 grams of steroids from a parcel of chargers destined to an Edmonton address. Officers were suspicious with the parcel and upon opening it contained goods as declared, however officers removed a cover from one charger and noted 45 vials of white powder inside. The drugs were seized and the investigation is ongoing.
On September 26, Detector Dog Max showed interest in a traveller form the U.S. Further examination revealed the man had not declared his food items, and had also failed to declare over $10,500 in cash. The food was held for destruction and the man was issued a $250 penalty for not declaring the currency.
