October 15, 2014 - Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Regional Minister for Nova Scotia, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced the acceptance of Canadian Coast Guard vessel CCGS Captain Goddard M.S.M. into the Coast Guard fleet. CCGS Captain Goddard M.S.M.is the last of nine Mid-Shore Patrol Vessels (MSPVs) built and delivered by Irving Shipbuilding Inc. to the Canadian Coast Guard.
The acceptance of the CCGS Captain Goddard M.S.M. marks the completion of a successful contract between the Canadian Coast Guard and Irving Shipbuilding to build each of its nine MSPVs.
As announced in September 2009, the MSPVs were built as a result of a $194 million contract in the context of the Canadian Coast Guard’s long-term Fleet Renewal Program. These vessels will be used for safety patrol, maritime safety, and search and rescue.
In November 2010, the Government of Canada announced that the MSPVs would be named after heroic Canadians who put their duty ahead of their safety in service to our country.
“As Canadians, we must be ever proud, remember and commemorate the role our women and men in uniform play in making our country and the world a safer place. It is a great honour to accept this new mid-shore patrol vessel in remembrance of Captain Nichola Goddard, a valiant soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our country. The official coming into service of this ninth Hero class vessel also marks the completion of a successful contract between the Canadian Coast Guard and Irving Shipbuilding. Our Government is proud to foster our shipbuilding capacity, creating jobs and economic opportunities for Nova Scotia, with benefits for all Canadians.”
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Regional Minister for Nova Scotia, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada
“Our Government is proud of its historic investments in the renewal of the Canadian Coast Guard fleet. That will ensure that our brave men and women in uniform have modern and efficient assets that will enable them to carry out their important duties and serve Canadians now and well into the future.”
The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans
“The acceptance of this last Mid-Shore Patrol Vessel, CCGS Captain Goddard M.S.M., marks the conclusion of a successful procurement process. This Government remains committed to ensuring the Canadian Coast Guard has the equipment it needs to protect the security and interests of Canadians while generating high-value employment opportunities and economic growth for Canada.”
