The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, was in Montreal today at the Transportation Association of Canada’s (TAC) annual conference where she marked its 100th anniversary and spoke to delegates about the important role transportation plays in supporting trade and economic growth.
The Minister detailed the Government of Canada’s commitment to the safety and security of Canada’s transportation system and discussed the measures that the Harper government has taken to address rail safety. She also spoke about the government’s statutory review of the Canada Transportation Act, which is aimed at ensuring that the legislation supports a modern, efficient and competitive transportation sector that is able to respond to future demands.
Minister Raitt emphasized the importance of modern, reliable infrastructure to maintain a safe, secure, efficient and environmentally responsible transportation system and international trade network. She highlighted recent investments in Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor as well as new bridges to be built in Montreal and Windsor-Detroit. She also put the spotlight on the New Building Canada Plan, which will see the Government of Canada invest $53 billion in infrastructure across the country over the next 10 years, the largest and longest federal infrastructure plan in our nation’s history.
