Today, the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, on behalf of the Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of National Defence, attended an opening ceremony for the new Edmundston Armoury in Edmundston, New Brunswick.
This modern facility provides “A” Company of the Royal New Brunswick Regiment with a permanent home in the heart of Edmundston. This project represents an investment of approximately $8.9 million in defence infrastructure and 84 jobs were created from the construction of this facility.
The armoury is being named the “Master Corporal Charles (Chuck) Michaud Armoury.” Master Corporal Michaud, a native of Edmundston, New Brunswick, died on July 4, 2009, from injuries sustained in an improvised explosive device incident that occurred in Panjway District, Afghanistan, on June 23 of that year. Master Corporal Michaud had been serving as a member of the 2e Batallion, Royal 22e Régiment Battle Group in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on his third operational tour and second to Afghanistan.
· The Government of Canada has completed the 1524 m2 facility to accommodate “A” Company of the Royal New Brunswick Regiment in Edmundston.
· This modern facility will increase the visibility of the reserve force in the community, reduce travel distance for local personnel, and offer a better facility for training and equipment maintenance.
· The facility includes office and conference rooms, classrooms, a mess dining hall, as well as a drill hall.
