Today, on the occasion of the CEO Summit of the Devonshire Initiative, Minister Paradis announced Canada’s support to the following development projects:
Canada’s contribution to the World Bank will support the Government of Mozambique’s efforts to implement reforms to manage responsibly the country’s mining and gas sectors. Efforts will focus on reforming Mozambique’s extractive industry tax administration system and managing the environmental and social impacts of mining and gas development through assessments and regulatory reviews.
Canada’s contribution to the International Institute for Sustainable Development will enhance the capacity of the members of the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) to implement the Forum’s Mining Policy Framework. There will be a particular focus on developing analytical tools to help assess the progress of developing countries in implementing the recommendations of the framework. Countries targeted through the project include the Dominican Republic, Madagascar and Uganda.
Canada’s contribution to the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) supports Canada’s continued role and leadership as the Secretariat for the Forum, the delivery of the IGF’s Annual General Meeting, and the participation of developing countries. The IGF was established in 2005 to enhance the contribution of the extractive resources sector to global sustainable development through responsible management. The forum involves representatives from resource-rich developing countries, donors, civil society groups and the private sector in such areas as the development and implementation of international standards and resource management practices.
