It is a pleasure to join all of you here for this presentation of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
In its more than 400 year history, Québec City has been home to many who have helped build this community, this province and this nation. And over the course of that time, we have seen that it takes all people, of all nationalities, all languages, and, yes, all ages, working together to make a difference.
Throughout my time as governor general, I have seen examples of Canadian youth in particular who are practicing this type of nation building.
They are becoming leaders and advocates for all manner of issues affecting our society. They are fighting for equality and fairness.
They show their compassion and concern for their family, friends, neighbours and even strangers. They care about the well-being of our planet.
And, most importantly, they are making an impact today, using their skills and talents to create a smarter, more caring nation one community at a time.
They do so because they know that the country to which we aspire is a goal, not a given.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a wonderful tribute to the determination of youth. All of you being honoured here have taken it upon yourselves to contribute to our country in many different ways.
Your example reminds us that we must be innovative and bold in finding solutions, while striving to enhance the best of our traditions. You are a vital source of ideas and renewal for our country, and I know that our confidence is well placed.
In 2017, Canadians will celebrate their 150th anniversary as a nation, and I want to invite you to imagine the kind of country you want to live in as we approach this milestone. So let me ask you: what will your gift be to our country?
In other words, how will you use your experience with The Duke of Edinburgh Award to make this country a better place to live?
Having earned this award, you have already shown yourselves to be conscientious and engaged citizens, so I have no doubt that you will continue to give back to your communities.
One thing is certain: your energy and contributions are essential to building a smarter, more caring Canada.
On behalf of all Canadians, I thank and congratulate each of today’s Award recipients on your achievements.
You set an example for all of us.
Thank you.
