OTTAWA — The Honourable Rob Nicholson, the Minister of National Defence, issued the following statement:
“Canada is mourning the loss of two of our military members. Corporal Nathan Cirillo died while proudly serving at his post in Ottawa and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent died in a tragic incident in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC. Our thoughts remain with their families and friends at this time.
“The Canadian Armed Forces remain undeterred in paying tribute to this nation's fallen, including Corporal Cirillo and Warrant Officer Vincent, and continue, resolutely, to show dignity and respect for all that the National War Monument symbolizes.
“Today, I am pleased to announce that the National Sentry Program will resume following its suspension after the tragic events on the morning of October 22. Prime Minister Harper and Chief of Defense Staff Lawson were on-hand today for the return of the sentries in Ottawa. Canadian Armed Forces members will continue to vigilantly stand-to in the name of all those who have fallen on behalf of our country.
“The National Sentry Program reinforces the Canadian commitment to remember and honour Canadians who served in both World Wars, as well as those who have contributed to Canada’s long standing tradition of military excellence through to the present day.”
