World Breastfeeding Week is a time to celebrate the role breastfeeding plays in providing children with the healthiest start in life. This year's theme, "Breastfeeding: A Winning Goal - For Life!" acknowledges the importance of breastfeeding to achieve a range of global health and development goals.
Breast milk has just the right amount of protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals, and contains antibodies and other immune factors to help protect against infections and disease. Breastfeeding is important for mothers' health too, and it can nurture the special relationship between mother and baby.
Breast milk is the best food you can offer your baby and is the only food or drink needed for the first six months of life. After that, breastfeeding should continue for up to two years or more, along with age-appropriate solid foods. While most women in Canada are breastfeeding their babies, many stop after the first few weeks or months. Support and encouragement during this time is invaluable.
Recently, the Public Health Agency of Canada released an updated workbook that provides practical strategies to promote breastfeeding within a community setting, with a special focus on reaching vulnerable populations.
During World Breastfeeding Week in Canada, I want to thank the health professionals, health organizations, researchers, policy makers and community programs for their efforts in supporting and promoting breastfeeding in Canada. This week, I encourage all expectant parents to learn more about the importance of breastfeeding, and all Canadians to play a role in creating environments that support breastfeeding.
The Honourable Rona Ambrose
Minister of Health
