Project made possible thanks to federal Gas Tax Fund

Residents of Sault Ste. Marie are enjoying multiple benefits from new road and water infrastructure thanks to contributions from the federal Gas Tax Fund. Representatives gathered today to celebrate the completion of the work.
The project included replacing century-old pipes with modern storm and sanitary sewers, as well as adding new curbs, sidewalks and paving on Queen Street East between Simpson and Pine streets. Bike lanes and a multi-use path were also added along the south side of Queen Street East to expand the John Rowswell Hub Trail and create a new connection between the downtown waterfront and Bellevue Park.
This work has improved water and sewer services for the community, enhanced driving conditions and increased walking and cycling opportunities for residents looking for alternative ways to get around the city.

"It is always exciting to see the completion of a road reconstruction project in our community, especially when it involves the reconstruction of one of the main arteries in the city. Queen Street is one of our most historic streets and provides an entrance way into the heart of our downtown. The addition of bicycle paths is a step in the right direction to encourage the use of active transportation in the Sault, and furthermore, it provides a connection on the Hub Trail between our Downtown waterfront and Bellevue Park.
