Ottawa, November 25, 2014—Upon the release of the Fall Report of the Auditor General of Canada, Industry Minister James Moore made the following statement:
"In 2009, the automotive industry across Canada faced a near total collapse caused by the global economic downturn. Our government understood the seriousness of the situation and, in response, took action and protected the Canadian automotive industry through the global recession. Our actions saved approximately 52,000 good quality jobs in Canada.
"Canada's auto industry is now seeing positive results. In fact, recently Canada posted the largest export of auto products since the start of the recession.
"Our government's support for the auto sector is focused on projects that secure high-value jobs and deliver long-term economic benefits to Canada.
"We are confident that Canada's suite of policies—low taxes, global trade opportunities, investment policies and a skilled workforce—will keep Canada's auto sector among global leaders. We look forward to continuing our strong relationship with Canada's automotive industry.
"The Auditor General has made four recommendations. Our government accepts all four recommendations and is already taking steps to implement them."
