Ottawa - The Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of National Defence, today announced the Government’s intent to upgrade the defence missile system onboard the Royal Canadian Navy’s fleet of newly modernized Halifax-class frigates. The first step in the upgrade process is the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the development of the Evolved Seasparrow Missile Block 2.
The Evolved Seasparrow Missile is at the core of the current Point-Defense Missile System onboard the Halifax-Class frigates, forming part of the comprehensive integrated combat system. Evolving complex threats and a commitment to ensure Canada’s men and women in uniform have the equipment they need to carry out their missions helped identify a missile upgrade as a future requirement for the frigates.
This arrangement is a commitment to develop the latest version of maritime Point-Defense Missile System with 11 partner nations, known as the NATO Seasparrow Consortium.
