Projects possible thanks to federal Gas Tax Fund
December 17, 2014 – Oro-Medonte, Ontario – Infrastructure Canada
Residents of Oro-Medonte now enjoy smoother rides on four local roads, thanks to contributions from the federal Gas Tax Fund. The completion of this roadwork will improve traffic flow, increase road safety, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide better drainage on Line 5 North for years to come.
Joint investments from the federal and municipal governments supported five local road improvement projects throughout the township. The existing pavement on Line 3 North was pulverised between Ski Trail Road and Highway 11, granular gravel was spread and the road was repaved to improve the distribution of vehicles' loads and reduce concentrated strain on the new road thus expanding its lifespan. In addition, Bay Street and two sections of Line 6 North were repaved, helping to reduce wear and tear on vehicles, fuel consumption, and tire-generated noise on the road surface.
Meanwhile, work on Line 5 North from Peter Street to Moonstone Road included excavation, culvert replacement, new ditches and road resurfacing. This will improve drainage along the roadway and reduce the risk of sink holes, road collapses and flooding. Drivers will enjoy the benefits of the smooth surface and improved roadway.
"Our Government is pleased to provide municipalities like Oro-Medonte with flexible infrastructure funding that allows them to support projects that address the needs of their communities. These local road improvements, made possible through the federal Gas Tax Fund, will provide a safer and smoother ride for drivers and cyclists, as well as help protect the environment through reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Looking ahead, our investments through the federal Gas Tax Fund will continue to generate economic growth and job creation across Ontario communities for years to come."
