Project possible thanks to federal Gas Tax Fund
January 16, 2015 – Brampton, Ontario – Infrastructure Canada
Brampton residents are benefitting from improved transit services thanks to contributions from the federal Gas Tax Fund. Over the past year, joint investments from the federal, provincial and municipal governments supported the renewal and expansion of the City's fleet and transit road infrastructure.
Overall, 15 new low-floor buses with increased accessibility and improved Presto fare collection and SmartBus technologies hit the city's roads, replacing aging vehicles and increasing the fleet to meet the expanding needs of the community. An additional ten buses were refurbished, to help extend their lifespan by six years and maintain current and future service levels for public transit users. Bus stop shelters and concrete flooring were replaced, to increase passenger comfort, safety and convenience.
"Everybody — individuals, families, communities, and businesses — benefits from public transportation: it enhances personal opportunities, saves fuel, reduces congestion, provides economic opportunities and reduces the carbon footprint. Since 2006, our government has extended, doubled, indexed and made permanent the federal Gas Tax Fund, delivering significant predictable, long-term infrastructure funding for local priorities like these transit improvements, which will help improve the quality of life in Brampton for years to come."
- Kyle Seeback, Member of Parliament for Brampton West
"Innovative communities around the world rely on connections – between individuals, businesses and neighbouring communities — to grow, succeed and provide employment opportunities close to home. Efficient transportation and transit within, into and through Brampton is critical to our economic successes. Continued investment in Brampton by the provincial and federal governments is appreciated and essential to the prosperity of the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area and broader region."
