The Play Exchange is a national challenge that was launched in February 2014, in partnership with the Public Health Agency of Canada, Canadian Tire and LIFT Philanthropy Partners, and with support from CBC. The goal was to find and support creative ideas to get Canadians living healthier lifestyles. All Canadians were encouraged to submit their ideas for a healthier Canada, and hundreds of applications were received.
The top six finalists were showcased on a national CBC television special in January 2015, and Canadians then had a week to vote for their favourite active living idea.
Today’s announcement revealed Trottibus as the project Canadians chose as the winner of The Play Exchange, and recipient of up to $1 million in investment funding from the federal government to launch their idea across the country.
Trottibus Walking School Bus is an innovative active transportation idea submitted by the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). As a pedestrian bus service, it provides elementary school children a safe and fun way to get to school every day of the week all the while being active.
Through planned walking routes and stops every weekday morning, two adult volunteers accompany a group of kindergarten to third grade children to school. The CCS provides training and the necessary tools to individuals leading and implementing the project and also helps with volunteer recruitment as required.
