The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, today met with the Honourable Jim Prentice, Premier of Alberta, and Chief Billy Joe Laboucan of the Lubicon Lake Band. At this meeting, Minister Valcourt announced the appointment of Ralph Peterson as Chief Federal Negotiator in the land claim talks with the Lubicon Lake Band and the Government of Alberta.
As demonstrated by this appointment, the Government of Canada is firmly committed to advancing the work on shared solutions that will lead to an improved quality of life, new economic opportunities and greater prosperity for members of the Lubicon Lake Band.
During his address, Minister Valcourt noted that today’s announcement clearly demonstrates the resolve of all parties to work together on a settlement that balances the interests of all Canadians.

Ralph Peterson is a senior business executive with extensive experience in finance, corporate risk management, leading teams of professionals in dealing with sensitive and complex matters and conducting fact-finding missions on challenging issues involving multi-party discussions.
Mr. Peterson was a partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers in various roles, including: Managing Partner of the Edmonton Office of Price Waterhouse and Edmonton Market Leader for PricewaterhouseCoopers. Mr. Peterson has also served in industry in various capacities including Chief Financial Officer and Chief Executive Officer. Throughout his career, Mr. Peterson has worked closely with a variety of legal and other professionals and stakeholders to successfully negotiate and conclude agreements and other arrangements.
Mr. Peterson is a graduate of Wilfred Laurier University with a BBA (Honours Baccalaureate in Business Administration), a Chartered accountant and is currently Director (and Chair) of a private corporate Board. In addition to being a Fellow Chartered Insolvency and Restructuring Professional (Ret), he is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors, the Board of the General Insurance Statistical Agency and the Edmonton Chapter Executive of the Institute of Corporate Directors. He is an Appeals Commissioner for the Appeals Commission for Alberta Worker’s Compensation and a Trustee for the Edmonton Pipe Industry Pension Trust and Health and Welfare Fund. He was also the Founding Chair of the Board of the Canadian Airports Reciprocal Insurance Exchange.
