March is National Nutrition Month and an excellent time to think about making healthier food choices both at home and on the go.
The Dietitians of Canada's National Nutrition Month Campaign reminds Canadians about the importance of healthy eating and the positive impact of nutrition on our health. This year's campaign has the slogan Eating 9 to 5! -- dedicated to inspiring Canadians to eat better at work and to make other positive changes for a healthier workplace.
As Minister of Health, I certainly understand the challenge of eating healthy during a busy workday. We can all use a little help in this regard, and Health Canada's website makes it easy to find information on making quick, healthy lunches and other meals, as well as tips for choosing healthier options when eating out at restaurants and cafeterias.
In the past year, the Government of Canada has delivered on several commitments to help Canadians make healthier and more informed food choices. We consulted with Canadians across the country on ways to improve the nutritional information on food labels. The valuable input we received will be used to update the look, content and organization of nutrition labels. We also launched web material to improve Canadians' understanding of Canada's Food Guide so it's easier to use when planning meals, snacks and menus.
Health Canada has other online resources to support healthy eating:
Since physical activity is also an important part of a healthy lifestyle, visit the Public Health Agency of Canada's website for tips on how to get active in your day-to-day life.
In the spirit of National Nutrition Month, I encourage all Canadians to choose healthy and nutritious foods, wherever you are and whatever the time of day, throughout the year.
The Honourable Rona Ambrose
Minister of Health
