Ottawa, Ontario - 17 March 2015
Prime Minister Stephen Harper is pleased to announce that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, has welcomed the continuance in office of His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston as Governor General until September 2017.
His Excellency has accepted the Prime Minister’s invitation to remain in office for this extended term, which will cover many of the events celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation.
During his time as Governor General, David Johnston has been an energetic promoter of a smart and caring nation, with a focus on innovation, education, volunteerism, philanthropy and active living, which was part of his call to service in his installation speech. He has also been a tremendous ambassador for Canada both on his official travels to South America, Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States, as well as here at home, including hosting four Royal Tours.
He and his wife, Sharon Johnston, have regularly opened their home and the grounds at Rideau Hall to Canadians by hosting concerts, movie nights and skating parties on the rink located at the official residence.
Governor General David Johnston has played an important role in his official functions, teaching Canadians and others about the vital constitutional role of the Crown in Canada.
