The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to share a sample of its first quarter highlights (January to March) from its operations in Regina and Saskatoon, including airport, commercial and inland operations. This sampling underscores the CBSA’s commitment to keeping communities safe and ensuring our laws are respected.
From January to March, border services Officers (BSOs) at Regina airport made two seizures of child pornography; both matters are still under investigation. In March, Regina officers seized the equivalent of over Can$10,000 for non-reporting from two foreign nationals seeking entry for work purposes. Travellers are required to report if they are travelling with Can$10,000 as part of CBSA’s mandate to protect Canada from proceeds of organized crime.
On January 5, Saskatoon BSOs seized a shipment containing 22 brass knuckles. That same month, Saskatoon airport BSOs seized one can of pepper spray purchased in the U.S. by a returning Canadian. Also in January, Regina airport BSOs seized five butterfly knives from a couple returning from Southeast Asia; these are prohibited weapons in Canada. The couple was travelling with a large amount of luggage yet only declared $100 in acquired goods from the trip. The couple also claimed this was their first time travelling internationally, however records indicated they had traveled several times before. BSOs also seized prohibited food products containing dairy and meat from the same travellers.
From January to March, officers in Regina and Saskatoon made 19 seizures of small amounts of suspected narcotics including marijuana, cocaine, opium and controlled substances (prescription drugs, steroids) and related drug paraphenelia/items (pipes). When entering Canada with prescription drugs, these must be in their original dispenser containers and no more than a three-month supply is permitted, as per the Food and Drug Act and Regulations.
