South Esk, New Brunswick - Today, the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, joined by Tilly O’Neill-Gordon, Member of Parliament for Miramichi, announced more than half a million dollars in funding for major upgrades to the Government of Canada’s science station located in South Esk, New Brunswick.
This investment will allow significant renovations and construction work that will enhance Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s research environment. The station currently carries out monitoring and scientific field work related to Atlantic salmon, striped bass and other species in the Miramichi watershed.
The current installations, which include a field laboratory, office space, sleeping quarters for staff as well as a separate storage building, will be updated. An outdoor compound and work area will also be expanded in order to store equipment, such as boats and nets, on site. As such, this will enable the consolidation of storage and scientific gear drying facilities that are currently at a location about 10 km from the science station.
