Panama City, Panama - 11 April 2015
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today concluded a two-day visit to Panama City, Panama, where he participated in the seventh Summit of the Americas from April 10 to 11, 2015 and announced further commitments to the region. He was joined by Rob Nicholson, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
During the Summit, leaders, ministers and senior representatives from all 35 countries of the Americas discussed increased regional collaboration to bring about prosperity, with a special focus on trade, education, health, energy, environment, migration, security, citizen participation and democratic governance.
Prior to the Summit’s inauguration on April 10, the Prime Minister participated in a roundtable discussion with Canadian CEOs attending the CEO Summit of the Americas. Following the opening ceremony, he attended a dinner hosted by Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela.
In his address to fellow leaders during the Summit’s plenary session on April 11, Prime Minister Harper focused on the importance of Canada’s commitment to working with our neighbours for a more prosperous and secure region that is rooted in core values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. He also announced security, democratic governance, health and border management projects for the region.
Later that day, he attended a reception to highlight the 2015 Pan American and Parapan American Games that will take place in Toronto, Ontario, and surrounding communities, this summer.
During the Summit, the Prime Minister also announced several projects aimed at strengthening economic growth across Latin America and the Caribbean.
