Point of View Suites receives federal support to enhance 18th century dining experience
April 13, 2015 – Louisbourg, NS – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
As you enter the Beggars Banquet at Point View Suites in the historic town of Louisbourg, you step back in time to an 18th century French fortress town on the edge of the “New World.” The inn’s popular nightly dining experience enables guests from around the world to don bonnets and tricorn hats to enjoy a historically-themed, flavour-filled evening complete with 18th century entertainment.
Point of View Suites has been hosting the Beggars Banquet since 2010 in a tent on the property. Thanks to a $75,000 repayable contribution from the Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Business Development Program, visitors to the popular nightly event will be treated to an enhanced dining experience. The owners are constructing a 12m x 21m permanent structure that will feature an 18th century motif to complement Point of View’s experiential-based programming that capitalizes on the inn’s strategic location overlooking the reconstructed Fortress of Louisbourg.
Guests choose from a menu that includes local seafood and while they dine, owner Linda Kennedy and her 18th century-style musicians, entertain them with stories, lyrics and tunes about love and life in the 1700s. It all makes for a uniquely Cape Breton Island adventure.
Quick Facts:
- Point of View is a four-star tourist destination, located on Louisbourg’s historic waterfront, which operates seasonally from May to October. It includes a 16-room inn and a three-unit beach house.
- Owned by local residents, Linda and Tom Kennedy, it overlooks Louisbourg Harbour and the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site.
- The Kennedys have offered the Beggars Banquet since 2010 and welcome visitors nightly from mid-June to mid-September.
- The Fortress of Louisbourg is the largest reconstruction project in North America. Operated by Parks Canada, the site provides various interpretive programs and has more than a dozen buildings open to the public. During the summer months, hundreds of re-enactors or “animators” of all ages, populate the streets of the restored fortress working, playing and living life as they would have in 1744.
Quotes:
“Our Government recognizes that a sustainable tourism industry is vital to building strong, healthy communities. The Fortress of Louisbourg is an iconic tourist attraction in Nova Scotia and we are pleased to work with local business people who want to share the area’s heritage and culture with visitors and contribute to the economic growth of the community.”
- Senator Michael L. MacDonald, on behalf of the Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency)
“The Beggars Banquet is the perfect complement to a visit to the Fortress of Louisbourg and we have had great feedback from visitors over the past five years. With ACOA’s support, we are now able to enhance their experience by providing a more authentic 18th-century atmosphere.”
