Grasslands’ family-fun summer line-up
May 28, 2015 – Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan – Parks Canada
David Anderson, Member of Parliament for Cypress Hills—Grasslands, on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, today highlighted the 2015 season programming in Grasslands National Park, encouraging visitors to discover this national treasure in the heart of the Saskatchewan prairie.
On the weekend of July 25-26, Parks Canada is hosting a Sleep-Under-The-Stars Party in the West Block of Grasslands National Park. Activities include an outside concert featuring Navajo, kayaking on the Frenchman River, wagon rides, stories of the open range, seeking out the elusive black-footed ferrets and star-gazing in our country’s darkest Dark Sky Preserve with the Astronomical Society of Canada. Sunday’s program include a pancake breakfast and guided walk.
On August 15 to 17 in the East Block of Grasslands National Park, kick up your heels beneath the stars at a country hoedown during the Badlands Blast weekend and Fossil Fever event. Search for dinosaur fossils shoulder-to-shoulder with Canada’s leading palæontologists, or hop on a horse-drawn wagon for a tour of the Badlands.
Those looking for an authentic cowboy adventure can saddle-up and ride into the last of the Old West, drive cattle on the open range, enjoy cooking from a chuck wagon and sleep on a bedroll under the night sky. Half-day and overnight excursions are available, limited to six participants. Call the Visitor Centre at 1-306-298-2257 for reservations.
In addition to the amazing backcountry hiking opportunities, new family-friendly trails are being developed in the West Block to access some of the defining features of the Frenchman River Valley such as the views from 70 Mile Butte.
Various resource conservation volunteer activities and programs are offered. For more information, visit our website at www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/sk/grasslands/index.aspx.
