May 20, 2015 - St-John's, Newfoundland and Labrador
The Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (ACOA), on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced an over $40 million investment by the Government of Canada in the Canadian Coast Guard. A new Atlantic region headquarters will be built at the existing Coast Guard base in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
The new facility is designed for increased functionality in the modern workplace with the required codes and standards for occupational health and safety, and improved security. In support of government initiatives for green and energy efficient operations, tidal energy will be used to heat and cool the building. Other energy saving devices, such as lighting, low-E windows, and low water usage fixtures, will also be installed to further increase building efficiency.
The tender for site preparation will be awarded in May 2015, with construction of the new facility starting later in the year. The new building is scheduled for completion in 2018. Once the new building is in place, the old structure will be demolished.
Since 2006, the Government of Canada has provided unprecedented investments in public infrastructure across Canada. Last fall, Prime Minister Harper announced an additional investment of $5.8 billion over the next two years to invest in infrastructure across the country in areas such as heritage, First Nations education, defence, borders, research facilities, harbours, transportation and search and rescue to create jobs from coast to coast to coast. As part of this funding, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard will receive a total of $551.1 million.
