May 21, 2015 – Ottawa, Ontario – Transport Canada
The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, issued today this statement regarding Transport Canada’s progress on the Transportation Safety Board of Canada’s recommendations:
“I take recommendations from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada seriously and welcome this update in the aviation, marine, and rail sectors.
“Transport Canada is focused on addressing the TSB’s recommendations and has made significant progress to make Canada’s transportation system even safer.
“In December, I issued new rules to save lives and prevent vehicle-train collisions at over 23,000 grade crossings in Canada. To further protect the communities along Canada’s railway corridors, I recently introduced the TC-117, a stronger, even more resistant class of tank car for the transportation of dangerous goods. I also ordered trains transporting dangerous goods to slow down when travelling in highly urbanized areas.
“I also announced that we will begin working with the TSB to conduct a joint safety study on locomotive voice and video recorders. This will help us explore how voice and video recorders can be used to provide data to accident investigators and improve safety.
“Transport Canada is working to develop new regulations for fishing vessels through extensive consultations with industry. The department also recently launched a new contribution program to provide up to $900,000 over the next three years to promote safe commercial fishing practices and protect fishers from coast to coast to coast.
“In addition, Transport Canada has begun developing crew resource management requirements to help pilots better assess their environment, make effective decisions in critical situations, and prevent accidents.”
