June 18, 2015 – Ottawa-Gatineau – Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC)
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has been recognized by the Community of Federal Regulators for its work on two important initiatives that have had concrete outcomes for Canadians.
At a ceremony held yesterday, the CRTC received the award for Excellence in Regulatory Policy for its work on modernizing northern telecommunications. Through this initiative, Canadians living in the North will have access to modern and affordable telecommunications services, ensuring that they can participate in the digital economy.
The CRTC also received an award for Outstanding Contribution to Open and Innovative Regulation for its work on the Text with 9-1-1 initiative. Text with 9-1-1 enables hearing and speech-impaired Canadians to access emergency services more efficiently. Through this service, call centre operators are able to communicate with registered users via text messages.
For the Text with 9-1-1 initiative, CRTC staff received recommendations from the Emergency Services Working Group (ESWG), which is part of the CRTC Interconnection Steering Committee. The ESWG is an open forum composed of telecommunications service providers,
9-1-1 call centres, and 9-1-1 industry specialists.
Both initiatives required creative and innovative solutions that were developed with the active participation of individual Canadians, communities, service providers and many other local, provincial, territorial and national stakeholders.
