Projects made possible by the New Building Canada Plan
June 30, 2015 –– Cape Breton, Nova Scotia – Infrastructure Canada
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Regional Minister for Nova Scotia, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, was joined today by the Honourable Geoff MacLellan, Nova Scotia Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, and Cecil Clarke, Mayor of Cape Breton, to announce more than $19 million in federal funding for the Sydney Harbour West Wastewater Collection and Treatment Plant project under the New Building Canada Plan in Nova Scotia.
This project involves constructing a new wastewater collection system and treatment facility in Sydney Harbour West. The work also includes separating combined sanitary and storm sewer mains. This will bring wastewater treatment services in the area up to federal Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations, reduce the risk of combined sewer overflows into Sydney Harbour, and decrease the amount of groundwater entering the wastewater collection system. Once complete, the project will help make wastewater treatment in the region more efficient while reducing the collection system's impact on the environment.
The New Building Canada Plan is the largest and longest federal infrastructure plan in Canada's history.
This unprecedented commitment is providing $53 billion to support provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure from 2014-24.
Over this ten-year period, Nova Scotia will benefit from approximately $1 billion in dedicated federal funding, including almost $426 million under the New Building Canada Fund.
"Our Government is committed to supporting our communities so we can ensure a better quality of life for all Canadians and their families. With the New Building Canada Fund, our Government's support for public infrastructure and strengthening our communities has never been stronger. We are pleased to work with the Government of Nova Scotia to invest in the Sydney Harbour West wastewater collection and treatment plant and to approve other projects under the New Building Canada Fund. These investments are focused on creating jobs, promoting growth, and building strong, prosperous communities across Canada."
