Federal Infrastructure Investments Across Canada and in Toronto
Defence Infrastructure
The Department of National Defence has received $452 million for the repair and upgrade of Canadian Armed Forces facilities. Revitalized defence infrastructure across Canada will provide the Canadian Armed Forces with the facilities they need to provide support to troops and military families, to support the Reserve forces, to support operations at home and abroad, and to ensure the health and safety of our men and women in uniform.
The Department of National Defence has identified an opportunity to perform a number of improvements at its aging armouries across Canada. Over the next two years, $135 million will be invested in projects involving repairs to roofs, siding, plumbing, and heating and ventilation systems.
Details of investments in Toronto
The six facilities which will benefit from these infrastructure investments are:
- the Canadian Forces College will be upgraded and repaired at a cost of $4 million. The work includes the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system in the Curtis Hall;
- the co-located Denison Armoury and Military Family Resource Centre will be upgraded and repaired at a cost of $3.6 million. Work includes a heating and ventilation system and emergency generator for the Armoury and other repairs and upgrades for the centre;
- the naval reserve division HMCS York will benefit from new sanitation lines, along with other repairs including the jetty retaining wall, at a cost of $4 million; and,
- the Moss Park and Fort York armouries will see interior and exterior renovations and health and safety upgrades at a cost of $7.9 million.
Denison Armoury
The Denison Armoury, located at 1 Yukon Lane, was built in 2002, and houses the headquarters of 4th Canadian Division, the formation commanding Canadian Army units in Ontario, and 32 Canadian Brigade Group, which commands Army units in the Greater Toronto Area.
The Denison Armoury is also home to a number of field units. These include the Governor General’s Horse Guards, an Armoured Reconnaissance Primary Reserve Regiment; the 32 Service Battalion; the 32 Combat Engineer Regiment; the 2nd Military Police Regiment; and, the 2nd Intelligence Regiment.
Toronto Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC)
The Toronto MFRC, located at 5 York Lane, provides support to the parents, spouses and children of CAF members. MFRCs across Canada are committed to enriching the lives of individuals and families in CAF communities through positive action, education and support.
Canadian Forces College (CFC)
The CFC College, located at 215 Yonge Boulevard, is Canada’s centre of excellence for strategic levels of military education for selected senior leaders of the Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of National Defence and the Government of Canada.
Fort York Armoury
The Fort York Armoury, located at 660 Fleet Street, was built in 1933, and is located near the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition. It is home to a several Primary Reserve units including the Queen’s York Rangers, The Royal Regiment of Canada, 32 Signal Regiment and 32 Brigade Battle School. It also supports the Cadet movement.
Moss Park Armoury
The Moss Park Armoury, located at 130 Queen Street East, was constructed in the mid-1960s. It hosts several Primary Reserve Units. More than 600 reservists train at Moss Park. The Armoury is home to 25 Field Ambulance, 48th Highlanders of Canada, 7th Toronto Regiment Royal Canadian Artillery and the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada.
HMCS York
HMCS York, located at 659 Lake Shore Boulevard West, serves as the training unit for up to 200 part-time and full-time naval personnel. The mooring facilities used by the division are located to the south and belong to Toronto’s branch of the Canadian Forces Sailing Association, National Yacht Club and Alexandra Yatch Club. HMCS York parades one of five Royal Canadian Naval Reserve Ship’s Bands.
