Beginning summer of 2015, a $2.5 million project will begin to repair and renovate military quarters at CFB Suffield. This investment includes the renovation and repair of military quarters, as well as the single military quarters duplex houses in the Crown Village of Ralston, located on CFB Suffield. This project will involve the replacement or upgrade of air conditioning units, which will allow for better air flow and circulation. Other work will include carpet and tile replacement, window replacement, painting, numerous bathroom renovations, and general security enhancements.
Located in Southeast Alberta, approximately 50 kilometres west of Medicine Hat, CFB Suffield has been the site of military training in the region since 1972. CFB Suffield is host to the largest military training area in Canada, conducting the largest live-fire training exercises in the country. The Manoeuvre Training Area covers 1,588 square kilometres of a 2,700 square kilometre base. The mission of CFB Suffield is to provide a world class, sustainable Range and Training Area that enables the Canadian Armed Forces, Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) – Suffield Research Centre, the British Army Training Unit Suffield and other potential users to achieve their mandates through effective stewardship of all the Range Training Area, infrastructure and equipment.
CFB Suffield is home to the British Army Training Unit Suffield (BATUS), the British Army’s premier live fire training establishment. BATUS delivers world class live fire and manoeuvre training as well as force on force exercises using state of the art simulation technology.
The base is also the home of Defence Research and Development Canada – Suffield Research Centre (DRDC-SRC). It provides DND, the CAF and other government departments, as well as public safety and national security communities the knowledge and technological advantage to defend and protect Canada’s interests at home and abroad.
The Government of Canada is the custodian of a broad range of infrastructure and is committed to maintaining and improving infrastructure across the country. Investments in this critical infrastructure are a key element in our efforts to create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity. Amongst other purposes, our infrastructure allows people and goods to move more freely and safely across the country, supports scientific innovation, and protects Canada’s legendary natural heritage.
The Government is announcing an additional $5.8 billion in investments that will continue to build and renew infrastructure across the country. The majority of this support will be delivered within the next three years. Of this investment, $5.3 billion will go towards modernizing and repairing various infrastructure assets that will provide employment opportunities in communities across Canada and support services to Canadians that in turn contribute to Canada’s long-term economic prosperity. Also, $500 million will be allocated to the repair and construction of on-reserve schools.
This long-term commitment to building and maintaining world-class infrastructure will create jobs and improve the quality of life of all Canadians.
The Department of National Defence has received $452 million for the repair and upgrade of Canadian Armed Forces facilities. Revitalized defence infrastructure across Canada will provide the Canadian Armed Forces with the facilities they need to provide support to troops and military families, to support the Reserve forces, to support operations at home and abroad, and to ensure the health and safety of our men and women in uniform.
The Department of National Defence has identified an opportunity to perform a number of improvements at its aging armouries across Canada. Over the next two years, $135 million will be invested in projects involving repairs to roofs, siding, plumbing, and heating and ventilation systems.
