Project made possible thanks to New Building Canada Plan
July 31, 2015 –Township of Langley, British Columbia– Infrastructure Canada
Mark Warawa, Member of Parliament for Langley, was joined today by Rich Coleman, MLA Fort Langley-Aldergrove, on behalf of Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure and Jack Froese, Mayor of the Township of Langley, to announce funding of up to $22.333 million for the Highway 1 widening and 216 Street Interchange project under the New Building Canada Plan in British Columbia. The project will benefit drivers by reducing congestion and travel times while also improving safety.
Highway 1 is the primary transportation corridor in the province and it is an important component of the Asia-Pacific Gateway shipping network – connecting B.C.'s Lower Mainland with the rest of the province and beyond.
The project involves widening Highway 1, from four lanes to six, between 202 Street and 216 Street in the City of Langley. The widening work, which involves almost 3 km of highway, would reduce traffic volumes and travel times for travelers in the metro Vancouver area, while also offering drivers a safer highway network. The work also includes the construction of a new interchange at 216 Street.
The New Building Canada Plan is the largest and longest federal infrastructure plan in Canada's history.
This unprecedented commitment is providing $53 billion to support provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure, between 2014 and 2024.
Over this ten–year period, British Columbia will benefit from approximately $3.9 billion in dedicated federal funding, including almost $1.1 billion under the New Building Canada Fund.
This project reflects a commitment to improve highway safety as part of the province's 10-year transportation strategy – B.C. on the Move. This plan will improve the province's transportation network providing a comprehensive road map for transportation investments and strategic policy actions over the next decade.
