The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to share a sample of its second quarter highlights (April to July) from its various operations in Calgary, including airport, commercial, and inland operations. This sampling underscores the CBSA’s commitment to keeping communities safe and ensuring our laws are respected.
Between April and July, CBSA officers in Calgary made 48 currency seizures totaling Can$711,890. One currency seizure in April, led to the discovery of Can$10,045 hidden in a traveller’s shoes.
On May 30, a US resident arrived at the Calgary International Airport and failed to declare currency in excess of Can$10,000. She was travelling with US dollars that converted to Can$12,830. After several lengthy interviews, it was determined that the currency would be seized as she eventually admitted that the currency was obtained illegally by someone else and then given to her. As a result of the seizure, she was no longer able to support herself while in Canada and was inadmissible under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for lack of funds and returned to the U.S.
On May 21, a traveller arrived in Calgary and stated she was seeking entry to relax. Further exam revealed an email between the traveller and another individual, in which the traveller was instructed to say that she is coming to Canada to visit, relax, and go on a "retreat' to avoid a "red flag" from Immigration. When confronted with this information, the traveller stated that she was coming to teach a course for the company because the company was unable to find an instructor. She was aware that she required a work permit, and chose to misrepresent the purpose of her trip in an attempt to gain entry without a work permit. The traveller opted to leave Canada and departed later that day. All foreign nationals are reminded to know the requirements to work in Canada and obtain the proper documents before coming into Canada.
CBSA officers assisted the Calgary Police Service (CPS) in dismantling a multimillion dollar fraud ring in May, by providing information and arresting one of the individuals involved upon re-entry into Canada. Anshul Edison Fernando, 39, was one of three Calgarians charged as part of an ongoing fraud investigation. He was arrested and detained on May 30, 2015, by CBSA at the Calgary International Airport and turned over to CPS.
