Project made possible thanks to New Building Canada Plan
July 31, 2015 - Winnipeg, Manitoba
The Honourable Candice Bergen, Minster of State (Social Development) was joined today by the Honourable Greg Seliger, Premier of Manitoba, to announce funding of up to $165,000,000 for the Lake Manitoba and Lake St. Martin Outlet Channels project under the National Infrastructure Component of the New Building Canada Fund.
This project consists of the construction of an additional outlet channel from Lake Manitoba to Lake St. Martin and the conversion and enlargement of the Lake St. Martin Emergency outlet channel. This includes the construction of a permanent structure at the start of the Lake St. Martin channel, as well as an enhancement of the outlet channel. The project also involves the construction of a permanently engineered channel with an outlet to Lake Winnipeg, bypassing Dauphin River First Nation. The permanent structure will significantly reduce the economic burden that chronic flooding has had on the Province of Manitoba.
Through the $4-billion National Infrastructure Component of the New Building Canada Fund, the Government of Canada is providing financial support for projects with far-reaching benefits for all Canadians. The Fund supports infrastructure of national significance that has a strong impact on Canada's competitiveness, productivity and economic well-being.
