September 8, 2015 — Montreal – National Film Board of Canada (NFB)
Documentary film has long occupied a special place in Quebec’s cinematic landscape. As the “cinema of the real,” it is the means of expression chosen by numerous major filmmakers whose works, frequently innovative in form and content, shine light on current issues and events. L’institut national de l’image et du son (INIS) is therefore pleased to announce the return of its program Documentaire and thus contribute to the development of tomorrow’s documentarists. The five-month training program will commence in fall 2016.
Documentaire will be supported in part by the National Film Board of Canada and Cinémathèque québécoise. In this framework, the NFB will share its expertise in documentary production and multiplatform distribution in addition to opening its archives to students for various assignments. The Cinémathèque, in turn, will grant special access to its collection and screening rooms. The participation of other partners is to be confirmed shortly.
The program will be divided into two streams: Filmmaker and Producer. As in the past, all training will take place under professional conditions. The curriculum is based on exposing students to key works and having them meet renowned artists.
After learning the basics (observation, research, interviewing, scripting, editing, etc.), students in both streams will complete assignments that immerse them fully in the many-faceted world of documentary film. The program will also call on their capacity for teamwork as well as their curiosity, sensitivity and openness to the world. From one-off works to television series to webdocs, and from audio to interactive to multiplatform creations, all forms of the genre will be covered.
61 participants completed the program between 2007 and 2013; today, 80% of them work in a field directly related to their training. Registration for Documentaire 2016 will start in the spring.
The INIS promotes professional development in Quebec and Canadian film, television and interactive media by providing training and support to companies and individuals. The programs offered by the INIS promote content diversity while meeting the changing needs of the audiovisual, communication and entertainment markets.
