The Government of Canada announces over $2.8M in AI to advance economic growth and digital literacy

This information adds to the news release issued on February 6 Minister Chartrand announces over $2.8M in AI to advance economic growth and digital literacy outlining CanNor’s support, the businesses and organizations that received funding, and their projects.
The Government of Canada, through CanNor, is providing $2,815,999 in funding for four projects that support digital literacy and AI adoption in communities across Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon.
Project information
Project: AI Driven Entrepreneurship and Business Support Centre
Recipient: Prosper NWT
Location: Northwest Territories
Details: This three-year project aims to establish a centre that will develop a suite of AI-powered business tools and help businesses develop skills to use them effectively. Funding will be used to leverage AI for data and business analytics and to develop in-person and online AI training for business owners.

Project: Digital Literacy, Online Safety, and AI Training Program
Recipient: Inuvik Tech Society
Location: Gwich’in Settlement Region and Inuvialuit Settlement Region, Northwest Territories
Details: This two-year project aims to address gaps in digital skills and online safety in a region that only recently gained reliable, high-speed connectivity. CanNor funding will help the Inuvik Tech Society develop tailored curriculum and an online learning platform, set up a mobile training lab and deliver workshops on digital literacy, online safety, and AI to seven communities.

Project: Empowering Inuit-led Economic Growth Through AI and Innovation
Recipient: Nunavut Economic Developers Association
Location: Nunavut
Details: This three-year project aims to develop two AI and Machine Learning (ML) tools for community-level economic development in Nunavut. The first is a data-driven AI tool and process for creating Community economic development plans in Nunavut municipalities. The second is an AI/ML-powered grant and proposal writing tool that will enable Nunavut communities to independently draft applications aligned with their unique priorities and cultural context.

Project: AI platform for Arctic sensor
Recipient: DeltaVue Inc.
Location: Whitehorse, Yukon
Details: This one-year project aims to develop software that can interpret and standardize a wide array of sensor data. The software will convert various sensor types into a unified format compatible with existing AI systems which will allow northern governments, researchers, and industries to analyze data in a single platform. This will support faster, better decision-making across a variety of areas.
