News Release

August 25, 2017 – Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) is asking the public, Indigenous peoples and stakeholders to comment on discussion paper DIS-17-01, Framework for Recovery in the Event of a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency.

DIS-17-01 will be available for consultation for a 120-day period. To review and comment on the document, visit the DIS-17-01 Web page. Please submit your feedback by December 27, 2017. Comments submitted, including names and affiliations, are intended to be made public.

DIS-17-01 seeks feedback on a newly proposed regulatory document, which would present a framework for and provide guidance on the issues that should be considered in establishing a recovery plan in the event of a nuclear emergency in Canada. The proposed document would complement REGDOC-2.10.1, Nuclear Emergency Preparedness and Response

All comments received during the consultation will be reviewed and dispositioned. A What We Heard Report will be published to inform the public about how the CNSC will move forward, taking into account the feedback received.

The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect the health, safety, security and the environment; to implement Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy; and to disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.

Quick Facts

  • The proposed regulatory document for a recovery plan in the event of a nuclear or radiological emergency will develop a framework to describe the measures that decision makers may need to consider following the response to an emergency, in order to protect the public from potential health effects of long-term exposure to radiation.

  • The new regulatory document would complement the existing CNSC regulatory document REGDOC-2.10.1, Nuclear Emergency Preparedness and Response
