The new Champlain Bridge: Government of Canada asks Canadians for their views on modifying the name

News release

Montreal, Quebec, September 7, 2018 – The Government of Canada is proud to recognize many of this country’s most important historical figures by naming federal infrastructure in their honour. In Montreal, three federally-owned bridges – the Jacques Cartier Bridge, the Honoré Mercier Bridge and the Champlain Bridge – pay tribute to important figures whose contributions helped shape Quebec and Canada.

As work progresses on the replacement for the Champlain Bridge, Infrastructure Canada has consulted with experts and stakeholders to evaluate support for the idea of naming the new bridge Samuel De Champlain Bridge.

This consultative process was launched following requests received from residents and stakeholders in the Montreal region to modify the name of the bridge to add the historical figure’s first name. This change would align with naming conventions for infrastructure that favour the use of the first and last name of a historical figure.

As the next step in this consultative process, the Government of Canada invites the public to provide their feedback on this proposal. Comments will be accepted from September 7 to 21, 2018.

Infrastructure Canada will then compile and review this information together with feedback from its consultations with stakeholder groups and publish the results on its website.

Comments may be submitted electronically to Infrastructure Canada via email to this address infc.npsl-nbsl.infc@canada.ca or sent by mail to:
