Backgrounder: Canada and BC Hydro invest in green energy in mines and power facilities

The Government of Canada is investing more than $16.3 million through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program to support three green energy projects in British Columbia.

Barkerville Gold Mines Electrification

Funding will fully electrify underground mine equipment at the proposed Cariboo underground gold mine and processing plant and connect an existing substation to BC Hydro’s electricity grid.

Copper Mountain Mine Trolley Assist

Funding will electrify haul trucks at Copper Mountain using a trolley assist system consisting of grid-powered electric wires and pantographs and replace several remotely located diesel powered water pumps at the mine site with electrically powered pumps.

Creative Energy Decarbonization

Funding will decarbonize and reconfigure the Creative Energy steam plant to install new electric steam boilers, powered by clean energy through a new approximately 1.2 km underground power line connected to BC Hydro’s electricity grid.
